What are Money Belts?

In short, a money belt is a wearable item that is used to hold cash and other valuables such as passports and tickets etc. The idea is that they are worn underneath your garments (usually around the waste line underneath your belt etc.) to provide protection from pickpockets etc.

They are also a good option to keep cash safe should you need to carry a bit more than you feel comfortable with in your wallet or handbag and many also come with anti-skim shields to protect your credit cards as well.

Note: these are not to be confused with fanny packs/bum bags that sit outside the clothes on your waste.

What Should You Be Looking For?

The following factors should be considered as you look around for a good money belt for your travel needs.

  1. Size
  2. Capacity
  3. Durability
  4. RFID Blocking
  5. Additions

Size

When it comes to a money belt, I guess the main aspect here is to ensure that it will actually fit. Most come with adjustable belts however it is important to ensure that it will fit snugly around your waste so that it remains hidden.

Capacity

This is probably just another factor of the size however as well as it being a good fit to you physically, your belt must also be able to hold everything you need without it becoming too bulky. Most come with a cash and passport sized pocket whilst other have extra pouches in the back, or even in the belt as well.

If you do need to carry a bit extra, I suggest an option with two pouches so that both will remain a little flatter whilst still handling all of your travel needs.

Durability

Unfortunately we are not the only ones who know about money belts with pickpockets and the like becoming very adept at getting a hold of them as well – usually by cutting them off. So then a critical factor is to ensure that your chosen option is strong enough to handle the rigors of moving around on planes, busses and anything else you can arrange as well as resistance to cuts.

Your advantage here is that pickpockets tend not to want to hang around you for any length of time so if they can’t cut it off you at first go, they will usually walk away. So make sure whatever you get cannot be cut easily with scissors or a knife.

RFID blocking

Now, without turning this whole post into one of doom and gloom, with the invention of ‘tap and go’ credit cards, passport chips and the like, scammers have created little pieces of equipment that can scan your cards to steal their info for use themselves.

To counteract this, look for a money belt with Radio-Frequency IDentification (RFID) Blocking which provides for a secure barrier to resist scanners and keep your credit cards safe too.

Additions

Other potential additions include:

  • Breathable mesh backing – keeps it cooler at the back for extra comfort
  • Strong sips – for extra durability and protection

Is a money belt worth it?

Yes, Money belts are well worth the effort if you are traveling – especially in high traffic tourist areas and public transport. They work by hiding your cash and valuables on your body and away from the sticky fingers of pickpockets.
