1. Diamond Head Hike
For an unforgettable adventure and way to start the day, head to Diamond Head Crater for a hike. Diamond Head Summit Trail is a renowned hiking spot spanning a round trip distance of 1.6 miles that can be completed in approximately 2 hours.
Designed primarily for pedestrians, it offers a moderate level of difficulty. The journey begins on a paved concrete walkway, but as one progresses, the path becomes uneven and notably steep and along the way, hikers will encounter steep stairways and navigate through a long, lighted tunnel.
The trail’s history is rooted in its construction in 1908 as part of Oahu’s coastal defense system and upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with a glimpse into the geological and military history of the Diamond Head Crater, accompanied by breathtaking views of the southeastern Oahu shoreline.

2. Breakfast in Honolulu
After your hike, or instead of if the above does not appeal to you, head out to one of Honolulu’s many great eateries for breakfast. Here you can find everything from delicious coffee and breakfast dishes made with local ingredients such as acai bowls or avocado toast. Here are some good options to try:
1. Sweet E’s Cafe: Located in the heart of Honolulu on Oahu, Sweet E’s Cafe stands out as a favorite breakfast spot for both locals and tourists alike. This American-style cafe is particularly renowned for its signature breakfast burrito, which has become a go-to dish for many of its patrons.
The ambiance of the cafe, combined with its delightful breakfast offerings, makes it a must-visit for anyone looking to start their day with a hearty meal in Honolulu.
2. Over Easy: Over Easy is a breakfast haven that offers a blend of traditional and contemporary American dishes where one of the cafe’s most talked-about options is the pig hash with the crispy potatoes complementing the flavors perfectly.

3. Waikiki Beach Visit
No trip to Honolulu would be complete without a visit to Waikiki Beach. This world-famous stretch of sand is the perfect place to soak up the sun, catch some waves or simply people-watch. Framed by the majestic Diamond Head crater on one end and bustling downtown Honolulu on the other, Waikiki seamlessly blends natural beauty with urban sophistication.
Visitors can indulge in a myriad of water activities, from surfing and paddleboarding to catamaran rides and outrigger canoeing. The beachfront is lined with world-class resorts, restaurants and shops as well offering tourists something for all tastes.
And as the sun sets, Waikiki transforms into a hub of entertainment with live music, hula shows and torch lighting ceremonies, encapsulating the Aloha spirit.
4. Iolani Palace Tour
For a taste of Hawaii’s royal history, head to Iolani Palace. Rather than being the fictional headquarters of Steve McGarrett and his Hawaii 5-0 team, this stunning building was actually once the home of Hawaii’s the Hawaiian Kingdom’s last two monarchs: King Kalakaua, who commissioned its construction in 1879 and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani.
Inside, visitors can explore ornate rooms filled with royal memorabilia, artifacts and personal belongings of the monarchs, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Hawaii’s last reigning royals. The palace grounds also feature the Coronation Pavilion and the Sacred Mound, further enriching the site’s historical context.
Admission includes a guided tour of the palace’s ornate rooms and exhibits on Hawaiian culture and history. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the famous koa wood staircase and the royal throne room as well.

5. Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona Memorial
This next one is a personal favourite of mine and in my opinion, one of the must visits for history buffs and anyone interested in World War II in all of Hawaii. Pearl Harbor is a U.S. naval base that became the focal point of a pivotal moment in world history where on December 7, 1941, it was the target of a surprise military attack by the Japanese Empire, an event that led to the United States’ direct involvement in World War II.
In remembrance of this tragic event and to honor those who perished, the USS Arizona Memorial was established. This solemn monument, which floats above the sunken remains of the battleship, serves as a place of reflection and remembrance. Visitors to the memorial can observe the oil still leaking from the wreckage, often referred to as the “tears of the Arizona,” and can view the names of the fallen inscribed on the marble wall.
The Pearl Harbor National Memorial encompasses the USS Arizona Memorial as well as other historic sites, including the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, the Battleship Missouri Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Visitors can take a guided tour or explore on your own but either way, ensure to arrive early as tickets can sell out quickly.
Yep, that’s me at Pearl Harbor – the son of navy parents, this is a special spot for me!

6. Ala Moana Beach
If you’re looking for a place to unwind, Ala Moana Beach is the perfect spot. This beautiful beach is located just a few minutes away from Waikiki and is known for its calm waters and soft sand where you can rent a beach chair and umbrella, or simply lay your towel down on the sand and soak up the sun.
Take a refreshing dip in the ocean or go for a leisurely stroll along the shore making it the perfect way to recharge your batteries and get ready for the evening ahead or your late night flight.
7. International Market Place Shopping
If you’re in the mood for some retail therapy, head over to the International Market Place. Situated in the heart of Waikiki, this is a historic and vibrant shopping, dining and entertainment destination. In 2016, the International Market Place underwent a significant transformation, evolving from its bazaar-style origins into a modern, upscale shopping center.
Today, it boasts a blend of luxury retailers, unique boutiques and diverse dining options, all while retaining its rich cultural heritage. The design of the renovated space pays homage to its history, with Hawaiian motifs and references to the area’s past as a royal gathering place.
One of the highlights of the International Market Place is the Grand Lānai, which offers outdoor dining from an array of restaurants allowing visitors to enjoy culinary delights in the pleasant Hawaiian climate. Throughout the center, there are nods to Hawaiian culture, history and storytelling, ensuring that while it’s a contemporary shopping destination, the spirit and essence of old Waikiki are still very much alive.
For both tourists and locals, the International Market Place offers a unique blend of shopping and dining experiences, making it a must-visit when in Honolulu.
8. Hanauma Bay Snorkeling
Nestled within a volcanic crater on the southeastern coast of Oahu, Hanauma Bay is a nature preserve that is known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse marine life.
The bay’s crystal-clear waters and thriving coral reefs make it a snorkeler’s paradise. Home to over 400 species of marine life including colorful tropical fish, octopuses and green sea turtles, Hanauma Bay offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to observe and interact with a diverse array of underwater inhabitants in their natural habitat.
For non-snorkelers, the bay’s sandy shores are framed by lush green cliffs, providing a picturesque backdrop for sunbathers and beachgoers. The surrounding area also offers hiking trails that lead to vantage points with breathtaking panoramic views of the bay and the vast Pacific Ocean.
This is a great spot to take the little ones to introduce them to snorkeling although in my experience it can get a little crowed in busy times.

9. Manoa Falls Fauna and Flora
Tucked away in the lush Manoa Valley of Honolulu, Manoa Falls is a spectacular natural attraction that beckons nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. This cascading waterfall, which plunges 150 feet down a sheer rock face, is set against a backdrop of dense tropical rainforest, creating a scene straight out of a postcard.
The trail leading to the waterfall, known as the Manoa Falls Trail, is approximately 1.6 miles round trip and offers hikers an immersive experience in Hawaii’s diverse flora and fauna including towering bamboo groves, giant ferns and the sweet scent of eucalyptus. T
Along the way, hikers might also hear the melodic calls of native birds or catch a glimpse of a rainbow, especially if they embark on their journey in the early morning. The trail culminates at a viewing area where visitors can marvel at the majestic Manoa Falls, with its water often creating a serene pool below.
10. Dinner Cruise Experience
For a unique dining experience, consider taking a dinner cruise. You can enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the stunning views of the sunset and the city skyline from the water. One of the prominent providers of this experience is the Star of Honolulu, which offers a range of cruises tailored to different tastes and budgets including.
- Pacific Star Sunset Buffet & Show: This cruise offers a Pacific Rim buffet accompanied by their “Polynesian Journey” show. Priced at $109 for adults and $65 for children, it promises a delightful evening of food and entertainment.
- Star Sunset Dinner & Show: A more casual option, this cruise provides a 3-course dinner and features the “65 Years of Aloha” show. It’s priced at $132 for adults and $79 for children.
