what do you need to get married in Bali?

Balinese people take marriage ceremonies seriously and they are deeply rooted in local traditions and customs so it’s crucial to respect these traditions and the local people when planning your wedding. Additionally, getting married in Bali requires adherence to specific legal and cultural guidelines. So before we check some great Bali wedding locations, here’s a general overview:

Legal Requirements:

  • A couple must be of the opposite sex and over the age of 21, or parental consent is required.
  • A Notice of Intention to Marry must be lodged with the Civil Registry Office at least ten days before the wedding.
  • Both parties must hold a valid passport and birth certificate.
  • Both parties must provide a Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage from their consulate or diplomatic representative.
  • If either party is divorced, a valid divorce certificate must be presented.
  • If either party is widowed, a death certificate of the former spouse must be presented.
  • All documents should be translated into Indonesian by an authorized translator.

Religious Requirements:

  • Indonesia only recognizes six religions: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Protestantism, Catholicism, and Confucianism. Your wedding must conform to one of these religious practices.
  • You and your partner must share the same religion. If you do not, one party must convert to the other’s religion.
  • For a Hindu wedding (common in Bali), you must obtain a letter of baptism as a Hindu from the Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI).

Note that these are general requirements and may vary depending on your home country or any changes to Indonesian laws and you should always consult with a local wedding planner or legal advisor to ensure you meet all requirements. Many couples choose to have a legal wedding in their home country and then have a ceremonial wedding in Bali, which can alleviate some of the bureaucratic requirements.

The ceremonial wedding can be in traditional Balinese style or a style of your choosing.

When is The best time to get married in bali

When considering the perfect time to get married in Bali, several factors come into play. The dry season, which spans from April to October, is the most favored time for weddings, bringing with it sunlit days and a lower likelihood of rain, ensuring an outdoor celebration remains largely uninterrupted. However, this also means that these months see a surge in tourists, potentially leading to crowded venues and higher prices.

Moreover, it’s crucial to be aware of Balinese cultural and religious events as certain dates might be off-limits for celebrations or could complicate logistics due to local ceremonies and traditions. Thus, while the dry season is arguably the best time weather-wise, it’s essential to plan in advance, consider potential local events and perhaps seek out less frequented spots on the island to strike the perfect balance between weather and ambiance.
